TOTAL COMPENSATION – $103,018

Warren Police officers are tasked with protecting the public, enforcing laws, investigating crimes, and responding to emergencies. They must meet specific educational and physical requirements and complete the necessary certification. The role also demands strong interpersonal skills and the ability to handle stressful situations.

Patrol Assigned Areas:

  • Regularly patrol assigned neighborhoods or areas to ensure public safety.
  • Respond to calls for service, emergencies, and situations requiring law enforcement intervention.

Law Enforcement:

  • Enforce state and local laws, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Arrest individuals suspected of violating laws and ensure their rights are protected.
  • Write reports detailing incidents, arrests, and investigations.
  • Conduct traffic stops, issue citations, and enforce traffic laws.

Investigation and Reporting:

  • Investigate criminal activities and collect evidence.
  • Interview witnesses, victims, and suspects as part of investigations.
  • Prepare and submit incident reports, affidavits, and warrants for further investigation.

Community Engagement:

  • Engage with the community to build relationships and improve public safety.
  • Provide educational outreach and crime prevention programs.
  • Attend meetings with community members to discuss safety concerns.

Court Appearances:

  • Appear in court to testify in cases that require law enforcement testimony.
  • Present evidence and assist in prosecuting cases when necessary.

Respond to Emergencies:

  • Respond to emergencies including accidents, natural disasters, medical calls, and other urgent situations.
  • Provide first aid or medical assistance if needed.

Prevent Crime and Disorder:

  • Work proactively to prevent crime through observation and interaction.
  • Monitor activities within the community to identify potential criminal behavior.

Minimum Requirements

  • Age 20 or older by the closing date of application
  • Possess a valid license to operate a vehicle in the State of Michigan with a driving record that meets police and fire civil service standards.
  • United States citizen.
  • Must possess normal visual functions in each eye. Possess 20/20 corrected vision in each eye. Possess normal color vision
  • Must pass a physical examination including drug screening and a psychological evaluation within the guidelines established by the City, as modified by current law.
  • No felony convictions.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
  • Must pass a background investigation

Written Exam / Oral Board Interview

  • Must pass the written test administered through EMPCO Inc. within the past year with a score of 80 percent or higher, and the oral interview with a score of 80 percent or higher.
  • Applicants must score a minimum composite score of 80 percent on the written and oral examinations, with the examination weights of 70 percent for the written/practical exam and 30 percent for the oral board.
  • Applicants must create a profile, register and take the written exam to be administered by EMPCO Inc. Go to https://www.empco.net/testing to create a profile, register for the written exam and pay the exam fee. Applicants must complete the online profile and take the written exam by close of application period.

Preference Points

Applicants will receive preference points for:

  • Two (2) points for Honorably Discharges Veteran with three (3)+ years of active military service experience or four (4)+ years of reserve military experience; Verified by DD214 or NGB22 submitted at time of application.
  • Two (2) points for bachelor’s degree or higher education in any field, or one (1) point for associate’s degree in any field; Verified by official sealed transcript submitted at time of application.
  • These preference points will be added to the composite score of those that pass both the written and oral examinations at 80% each.

Experience Requirements

All applicants must be either:

  • A current police officer, OR
  • MCOLES certified/certifiable, OR
  • Enrolled in an MCOLES approved academy, OR
  • Possess a valid MCOLES Pre-Employment Physical and Written exam by the date stipulated in the application period.

MCOLES Recognition of Prior Training and Experience (RPTE)
A limited group of individuals, who have previous law enforcement training and/or experience, may seek eligibility for Michigan Law Enforcement Licensure through the Recognition of Prior Training and Experience (RPTE) program. A waiver of mandatory basic police training may be granted to a person who was previously a police officer in Michigan, in another state, or to a Michigan pre-service candidate who is seeking additional years of eligibility. Out-of-state candidate applications for the RPTE program will not be accepted unless the candidate has completed at least one year of full-time, fully empowered, paid police service following his/her police training.

  • Holidays: Paid 16 holidays per year plus time and a half to work a holiday; double time on holiday overtime
  • Vacation: 160 hours of paid vacation annually (from start) increasing yearly after 10 years
  • Additional: 16 hours of paid personal time annually; $100 Buy American Bonus. Buy or Lease a new Ford, GM or Stellantis Vehicle
  • Clothing: $1,100 annual reimbursement for uniform/equipment purchases; $600 annual reimbursement for cleaning of uniforms
  • Education: Certificate, Associates Degree or Bachelors Degree in a Police Science and/or Police Administration and/or four (4) years of service pays $200, $400, or $600 annually.
  • Longevity: $680 longevity bonus paid each year after 5 years; then increases by $680 every 5 years.
  • Gun Bonus: Annual bonus of $950 compensation for carrying your weapon off duty
